Sonim Technologies, maker of the world's toughest cell phones, and eBrake, an innovative new distracted driving solution for smartphones and tablets, today announced a cutting-edge partnership to eliminate distracted driving in fleet industries including public transit, school buses, utilities, oil and gas, construction, and more.
The partnership will result in eBrake embedded on select Sonim devices including the new XP8, an industrial- and military-grade device built to work in extreme conditions and environments while integrating functionality critical for industrial workers.
"Sonim's core values are based on safety first," said Sonim CEO Bob Plaschke. "Given the increase in distracted driving incidents in the transportation industry, our partnership with eBrake was a no brainer."
Fleets that deploy the XP8 and other Sonim devices will be able to protect their drivers and reduce liability risk from distracted driving crashes, simply by 'arming' eBrake.
"We're excited to partner with Sonim to tackle the distracted driving problem in some major fleet industries," said Troy Spracklin, CEO at eBrake Technologies. "eBrake combined with their marvellously designed and engineered smartphones will not only greatly reduce distracted driving, but do so in an unobtrusive, user-friendly way."
When eBrake detects motion, it locks the device and blocks incoming notifications. Most importantly, eBrake cannot be turned-off or shut-down by the driver when the vehicle is in motion. Bluetooth and voice activated systems are unaffected. eBrake can be customized to allow easy viewing of any application, like maps or dispatch, while blocking the ability to interact with the device.
Here are a few eBrake features for fleets:
- Automatically locks device when motion is detected
- Unique Passenger Unlock Test for when a driver happens to be a passenger
- Driver cannot pretend to be a passenger and unlock device when driving
- Easily deployed through Mobile Device Management (MDM) platforms
- No hardware needed
- Cost effective
eBrake completely eliminates the temptation for a fleet driver to pick up and use his device - be it to text, check social media, watch video ... anything.
Not only does this greatly reduce the chances of a distracted driving-related crash, it gives fleet owners peace of mind knowing their drivers (and brand) are safe.
Despite updated laws, fines, new technology solutions and public relation campaigns, the distracted driving problem is getting worse. Each day in the United States, approximately nine people are killed and more than 1,000 injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver; and texting while driving is 6X more likely to cause an accident than drunk driving.
